Kerbala attack: Iranian fingerprints?

*UPDATE*
If Iranian agents are behind the murder of US soldiers in Kerbala, some things ought to explode on the Iranian side of the border. Bill Roggio has been checking with intel sources:

The American Forces Information Service provides the details of the attack
in Karbala. Based on the sophisticated nature of the raid, as well as the
response, or cryptic non-responses, from multiple military and intelligence
sources, this raid appears to have been directed and executed by the Qods Force
branch of the Iranian Republican Guard Corps

Hot Air has the rest.

4 US Troops Abducted and Killed in Karbalah

When are we going to get serious and just crush these fucking assholes..

BAGHDAD, Iraq - In perhaps the boldest and most sophisticated attack in four years of warfare, gunmen speaking English, wearing U.S. military uniforms and carrying American weapons abducted four U.S. soldiers last week at the provincial headquarters in the Shiite holy city of Karbala and then shot them to death.

The U.S. military confirmed a report earlier Friday by The Associated Press that three of the soldiers were dead and one was mortally wounded with a gunshot to the head when they were found in a neighboring province, about 25 miles from the compound where they were captured. A fifth soldier was killed in the initial attack on the compound.

The new account contradicted a U.S. military statement on Jan. 20, the day of the raid on an Iraqi governor's office, that five soldiers were killed "repelling" the attack.

*snip*

In a statement issued late Friday, the military said two of the soldiers were handcuffed together in the back seat of an SUV near the southern Iraqi town of Mahawil. A third dead soldier was on the ground nearby. The fourth soldier died on the way to the hospital.

The brazen assault, 50 miles south of Baghdad, was conducted by nine to 12 gunmen posing as an American security team, the military confirmed. The attackers traveled in black GMC Suburban vehicles (the type used by U.S. government convoys), had American weapons, wore new U.S. military combat fatigues, and spoke English, according to two senior U.S. military officials as well as Iraqi officials.

“Of Prophets and Liars”

A Guest Commentary to the North Shore Sunday,
Submitted by John J. Kwiatek, Beverly, MA

Four decades ago, I was a student at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, MA. The Viet-Nam war was raging and, as a conscientious objector to war, I attended a protest gathering, “Clergy and Laymen Concerned about Viet-Nam”, in Washington. D.C. There I met and prayed with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Dr. King spoke to us on two occasions about his objections to the war and about our God given command to profoundly respect human dignity. Having recently celebrated his birthday, I am keenly aware of his prophetic message that violence is never the way forward in a world seeking to follow God’s vision of peace and brotherhood. Dr. King, often called a modern day prophet, died at the age of 39 and, as hard as it seems to me to accept, that was thirty-nine years ago. Prophets, in every age, seem to speak those difficult truths, which are so hard for us to hear, but are so necessary to be spoken in order to awaken the latent conscience.

During the nineteenth century, William Wilberforce, a prophet in his time, spoke forcefully about the scourge of slavery. He once said, “If to be feeling alive to the sufferings of my fellow creatures is to be a fanatic, I am one of the most incurable fanatics ever permitted to be at large.”

This week, I have been thinking of a lesser-known modern day prophet, my departed friend Charlie Swain. My memory of Charlie is as fresh today as is the promise I made to him at his death-bedside, to remind others of his prophetic “fanaticism” concerning abortion. I believe that only this kind of “good fanaticism” can bring today’s version of the slave trade, abortion, to an end.

I first met Charlie Swain at Sacred Heart Parish Church in Lynn, Massachusetts. Charlie was a daily communicant at mass and often spoke to me about my obligation to speak up for the unborn: those who had no power, nor voice, to speak for themselves. Charlie was most insistent about God’s moral command to stand, like M.L.K. and Wilberforce, with the most defenseless members of our society: the unborn. Psalm 139 was for him profound in expressing God’s intimacy with the human unborn. “You created my innermost self, knit me together in my mother’s womb. For so many marvels I thank you; a wonder am I and all your works are wonders.” (Ps. 139: 11 & 12) What upset Charlie most were the persistent lies of the Pro-Abortion lobby. Below, I hope to help expose a few of those lies.

In recent years, Planned Parenthood has asserted that the American public is “Solidly Pro-Choice.” This is a lie. Most people who speak about abortion are deeply conflicted about this issue and just this week a Gallup Poll reported that 47% of Americans interviewed affirmed that they want more restrictions on abortion. Young people especially are rejecting the idea that what is aborted is simply a mass of protoplasm. Modern ultrasound evidence easily contradicts that false assertion. They know that a beating heart is silenced in every abortion. Partial birth abortion is the straw that broke the back of Planned Parenthood as Americans are now aware of “Dr. Tiller the Killer” who in Kansas has performed a multitude of late term abortions. The lie is thus plainly exposed.

Dr. Bernard Nathanson, a former practitioner of abortion and co-founder of NARAL, (National Abortion Rights Action League), in his later years quit performing abortions. He had supervised over 60,000 abortions when his conscience finally gave in. He admitted that he was the originator of the lie of “back alley abortions.” Dr. Nathanson was once asked where did NARAL get the figure of “10,000 back alley abortions” performed each year before Roe-V. Wade became law. He responded, “I gave it to them. I made it up for the cause.” The truth is that, in 1972, nobody knows how many illegal abortions were performed. We do know that 39 deaths were reported as a result of abortion in 1972. Today, with what are called “safe and legal abortion,” we don’t even have a statistic for death after abortion. In 1986, the Center for Disease Control stopped counting. They said that it was “too difficult and confusing to get the statistics.” I suspect that it was also too embarrassing to announce the results to Americans. Nobody knows how many American women are dying after abortion today but I suspect that the cessation of statistics tells us a lot.

Another lie we have come to accept is that Roe-v. Wade has settled the law concerning abortion. It is far from settled. Roe v. Wade allowed abortion throughout the first trimester of a baby’s life. Atty. Sarah Weddington represented Ms. Norma McCovey in this case before the Supreme Court in 1973. Norma had lied to her lawyer in saying that she had sought an abortion because of having been raped. Norma, who had sought out an abortion in only one place, was asking her lawyer where she might suggest that she get one. The fact is that Ms. Weddington, herself, had recently had an abortion in Mexico. She lied to Ms. McCovey that she didn’t know where she might go and later lied to the court that Ms. McCovey had sought out many places to have it performed. Roe v. Wade is thus based upon many lies. Ms. McCovey never did have an abortion.

Doe v. Bolton is a second case before the court that was based upon lies. This case extended the right to abortion from the first trimester to the point of delivery. Sandra Cano, “Doe”, didn’t want an abortion at all. She had come to see her lawyer about a divorce. She never had an abortion nor sought one. Her ACLU lawyer, Ms. Margery Fitz Hayes saw an opportunity to advance the cause of abortion so, without telling her client, Ms. Cano, she proceeded to push this case all the way to the Supreme Court. Sandra Cano never knew this was even happening. The case came up with no evidence-unheard of at the Supreme Court. There was presented an affidavit that said that Sandra Cano asserted that she would “go crazy” if she had to have another baby. The truth is that Sandra was pregnant and wanted her baby. She had two babies who were at that time in state care and she wanted them back. She loved babies and wanted to have them. Her lawyer lied and said that Sandra wanted to be sterilized. More lies. Today both Ms. McCovey and Ms. Cano are active pro-life spokespersons. They are attempting to set the record straight and to dispel the lies surrounding “Roe v. Wade.”

One could list so many lies told by the pro-abortion lobby that there is not enough space in this commentary to list them. There are lies about a woman having the right to determine what we do with her own body. These rights are not unlimited and the unborn is never a “part” of a woman’s body. 50% of the time the baby is not even the same sex as is she and 100% of the time the child possesses different DNA from the mother. There are lies about choice. Our choices are not unlimited and the choice to have a child can and should be made long before conception. There are lies about informed consent. Seldom is the subject of such complicated surgery as abortion so uninformed as in the case of abortion. In recent years, 90% of women who came for an abortion have walked out without doing so once they saw an ultrasound of their baby. Planned Parenthood made $760 million in 2001. They have much to lose even when abortion becomes, as some call for it to be, “safe and rare.” Lies are no foundation for public policy. Perhaps, a little truth about abortion and its consequences: physical, social and moral, will set us free from this cancer on the soul of our nation. Abortion is based upon a foundation of lies.

Michelle and Bryan return from Iraq.

An Assesment of the Situation on the ground, from the troops and the Iraqi people.
Im looking forward to the rest of their story from the trip to the infamous "Green Zone" and beyond.

Michelle and I spent four days
patrolling the environs around Forward Operating Base Justice in north and west
Baghdad last week. FOB Justice is near one functional neighborhood, Khadimiyah,
one mostly recovered neighborhood, Al Salam, one dysfunctional neighborhood, Al
Hurriyah, and an al Qaeda-influenced area the name of which I never learned.

Welcome home and thank you!!

One more reason Massachusetts makes me sick

From the Boston Globe via boston.com

On a battlefield in southern Lebanon, in the middle of last summer's month long war between Hezbollah and Israel, he broke down weeping as he spoke with a pair of reporters: "I'm afraid to die," he sobbed.

But Bazzi was also a resolute Islamist, a charismatic pillar of Hezbollah's militia -- the kind of trainer, recruiter, and fighter that the Shi'ite movement depends on to maintain its popularity in southern Lebanon and southern Beirut.
